Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! Feel free to use one of the prompts below, or come up with something on your own! Comment around, have fun, and remember that any CR formed here does not carry over to the game!

♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

[Here's Hubert peeking in on Ivan's failed knot-tying attempts.]

Um...do you need help?

[He's actually pretty much a sailor newb, but he learned a bit of knot-tying from books and refined that knowledge via the old sea dogs on board the ship.]

[Here's Ivan looking over the Gordian monstrosity he has somehow managed to create. Hearing their lil cabin boy speak up, he sets it down and chuckles.]

... I wouldn't turn it down. How are you with knots, Hubert?

Well, I'm still learning. But I know one or two! Here, let me see what you have. [He holds out a hand.]

E for Evil - wait what

[sparkplasma]

All right. [Ivan obligingly hands over the rope.] I was going for - I think it's an anchor hitch? Do you know that one?

[Silently, though, he is half hoping Hubert doesn't know it. Because otherwise he's worse at this than the ten-year-old and that would just be depressing.]

F for Fffff

[Granted, Ivan is talking to a ten-year-old who loves ships and things related to ships. Most things, anyway. I am going to have to do my Google research for him]

Yeah! I just learned that one. Let's see...

[Well, Ivan's attempt at said knot is kind of a lost cause, so Hubert just flips it over to the other end to demonstrate to the other boy. He tries to go as slowly as possible, explaining what he's doing.]

So...it's twice around, then over, under, and over and under again!

[Easy like pie!]

[sparkplasma]

[WELP there goes Ivan's smart cred. Oh well, he wasn't too attached to that anyway. So he'll only sigh a little before he sucks it up and pays attention, trying to figure out where he messed up. Twice around, over, under, over - that's right, isn't it? He thought that was what he did.]

Ah. Can you show me that one more time?

[bitty_blue_brother]

Sure, no problem!

[And he goes through the motions again, even slower this time. It's good practice for Hubert, too, to be honest, and he likes being able to help out.]

[sparkplasma]

[Ivan watches intently, but then toward the end his face lights up with understanding.]

Oh! So it only goes through the main loop once.

[bitty_blue_brother]

Yup! [Hubert undoes the knot and hands the rope back to Ivan.] Do you want to try it again?

[IT'S TEST TIME.]

[sparkplasma]

[This WILL be on the exam. Ivan nods and takes it back to give it another attempt. It takes him a little longer, but the structure is correct when he finishes. He shows it back to Hubert, tentatively satisfied.]

Is that right?

[bitty_blue_brother]

Yeah! You got it!

[Well done, young padawan. Hubert beams with pride.]

[sparkplasma]

[Ivan smiles back, tentatively proud of himself.]

Hahah, thanks for your help. I'll probably keep practicing it a while longer, though.
