See you during the application round!
♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?
♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!
♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!
♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!
♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!
Ivan | Golden Sun
[Having already exhausted the first few things a normal person would do in this situation - that is, 1) panic, 2) spin around like an idiot, and 3) calm down and actually read the signs - Ivan is still no less confused than the moment he arrived in the square. Asking questions of the locals hasn't gotten him any information, apart from that they seem singularly unfazed by people appearing out of nowhere, so he's begun resorting to the obvious plan B... discreetly reading the minds of random passersby.
So yeah, if you happen to be passing by, what's on your mind? I'm sure there is no way this plan of his can possibly backfire.]
[B: Aboard Ship]
[Ivan's not entirely inexperienced as a sailor! It's just that most of the ships where he's from are completely different from these. As such, he's been spending most of his "on-duty" time getting rope burns, and most of his free time trying to learn how to actually tie knots. At the moment he can be found in the ship's mess, sitting at a table with a short length of rope that he's attempting to tie in a particular way.]
There's got to be an easier way to do this...
B!
Piers glanced up from his own work at Ivan's question and offered a sheepish smile in reply.]
That would be the Lash Pebble. Besides that, there aren't many more options other besides what you're doing right now.
[It was unfortunate too. The Lash Pebble was one of the few things around that could help inexperienced adepts learn the basics. Once more, he rued the fact that he couldn't find it.]
omg i had totally forgotten about the lash pebble. piers don't hog that thing, we'll lose the game
That's right, I'd almost forgotten about that thing. But I meant more like... [gestures encompassingly] all the ropes in general. Even with the Lash Pebble, you'd have to use it on each individual knot. Lemurian ships are so much more efficient.
we'll lose it anyway because we don't have it!
[It was interesting to adjust to, for sure.]
But there are still some similarities. The steering is the same, and sails do help immensely with propulsion. The main difference is that this system is so complicated...
[He laughed a little.] There's still alot of things that I need to learn myself. [Which was ironic, given how he was nominated the captain of their humble vessel solely because of his experience.]
It's a learning process for us all, but we think differently and might see something that the others don't. [Like Reveal. It's very revealing.] Don't discount anything.
Practice is the only thing that can help you with the knots for now. But-- [He reached out and placed a roughened, practiced hand on top of the current knot.] Don't rush. You will only hurt yourself if you're hasty, which won't help anyone here.
oh nooooooooooooo
It's all right. My hands could use some toughening up, anyway.
[They're not as soft as they used to be - when he'd first set out, he'd gotten blisters just from using a sword. But he doesn't have sailor hands by any means.]
WE'LL SURVIVE
You're hands will toughen up in time. It's no reason to rush right now. You've many other skills that will be helpful around here, after all.
no, this is a bug hunt, game over man, game over!!
[Understanding and accepting compliments are, needless to say, not among his skills.]
A! Since Piers snagged B, haha
Ivan might recognize the voice these thoughts are attached to; they're coming from Sheba, who is picking her way through the market with a basket of oranges under her arm. Piers could handle most injuries and illnesses, but she's heard horrifying stories about scurvy and what it could do to a person, and with Psynergy being harder to use here she'd rather prevent it than try and treat it later. There's a faint undercurrent of that in her thoughts as she continues, but after a moment her footsteps slow to a stop.
We're going to be setting out soon-- Wait, what's this feeling...
Someone is reading her mind. She casts her gaze around the market, trying to pinpoint who's doing it. She can't help but hope -
Ivan?]
yes good /snags u
Sheba! Where are you?
She must be close, but he can't see her. Crowds of tall people, you are the bane of his existence. Without waiting for her answer, he climbs up on a nearby bench to see if he can spot her.]
B for Blue
Um...do you need help?
[He's actually pretty much a sailor newb, but he learned a bit of knot-tying from books and refined that knowledge via the old sea dogs on board the ship.]
u mean c for cute patoot UuU
... I wouldn't turn it down. How are you with knots, Hubert?
D for Dork
E for Evil - wait what
[Silently, though, he is half hoping Hubert doesn't know it. Because otherwise he's worse at this than the ten-year-old and that would just be depressing.]
F for Fffff
I am going to have to do my Google research for him]Yeah! I just learned that one. Let's see...
[Well, Ivan's attempt at said knot is kind of a lost cause, so Hubert just flips it over to the other end to demonstrate to the other boy. He tries to go as slowly as possible, explaining what he's doing.]
So...it's twice around, then over, under, and over and under again!
[Easy like pie!]
no subject
Ah. Can you show me that one more time?
no subject
[And he goes through the motions again, even slower this time. It's good practice for Hubert, too, to be honest, and he likes being able to help out.]
no subject
Oh! So it only goes through the main loop once.
no subject
[IT'S TEST TIME.]
no subject
Is that right?
no subject
[Well done, young padawan. Hubert beams with pride.]
no subject
Hahah, thanks for your help. I'll probably keep practicing it a while longer, though.
A!
fun fact: I typed in malfoy and my iPod tried to correct it to "lapdog"
I assume. Ivan always notices the important things first. He approaches, trying to seem more nonchalant than he feels.]
Excuse me...
.......SEEMS LEGIT.
because he was modeling them in front of his bedroom mirror at the manor before all this nonsense happened. He jumps a little at the sudden new voice.]
What? [Forces himself to refrain from instantly whipping out his wand.] Who are you, what do you want?
no subject
Please, calm down. I-I'm as confused about all this as you are. My name's Ivan.
