Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! Feel free to use one of the prompts below, or come up with something on your own! Comment around, have fun, and remember that any CR formed here does not carry over to the game!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

♦ Arrr, here be buried treasure, but not all that glitters is gold! Will ye be telling your mateys what ye found, or keeping it for yourselves?

[There's a middle-aged man standing in the town square, looking bewildered.]

This is... not what I'd expected. Perhaps this isn't hell after all?

[In the ship's galley, the ship's doctor is frowning and sticking his hands into a small fire he's started in a pot on the stove. The sea air is cooler than he would have liked.]

Peter the Phoenix | Shining Force 2

(a) - He's a bit farther in his life at the moment, so he's pretty and bright with lovely red and yellow and blue feathers, seeming chipper and pretty where he's perched. It's not that hes as vain as most birds can be, but that he's catching some sun, because it feels so darn GOOD.

Peter has settled on the head of a ship. He doesn't know what ship. He doesn't know who's ship. It's a ship, that was in a harbor at some island he doesn't know. His tail feathers hang off the side, dangling in the sun and breeze, and he seems to be roosting, happily at the top of a figure head. Eyes closed and perfectly still, he's enjoying the break in freaking out over things and instead enjoying the sunny weather.

I'm sorry, is this your ship?

(b) - [The mention of freaking out from above? That was earlier. His claws clung to the top of a fountain in the middle of a down that was NOT where he was at last! This didn't look like ANY town it should have. In fact, this looked worse then most towns that he knew!]

[Hanging on to the broken fountain he huffed and puffed up, fluffing his feathers a bit as he glanced around the place.]

You want me to believe that this guy brought me here to find stones?! [he yelped at some woman that was trying to explain it to him. She'd shoved a small journal at him that he hadn't picked up. She then ran away!]

[Peter was all frazzled, losing a few smaller feathers here and there. He's a rather large bird, alsmot human child size, give or take a bit, so it as a lot of color and a lot of feather that was perched on a fountain.]

Please don't run away! Please, I didn't mean to sound ungrateful! It just doesn't make sense! God Volcanon! What did I do to deserve this?! [he called up into the heavens, clearly distraught.] You said I could help Bowie...

[Pardon him, he'll just stare, very wide-eyed, for a few minutes. Birds that size are not at all common where he's from, and Dr. Ravenshead isn't certain how to react. He eventually settles for:] So, you're, ah... caught off-guard by this too?

C-caught off guard!?

[He said as he looked back to see who was talking to him, he huffed and hopped off the top of the fountain and landed to the edge of it, standing tall and letting his feathers puff up a bit, then settle down again. For a bird, he looks rather stressed]

You can say that again! We were in the middle of battle no less, and here I am whisked away by some messenger of the gods to some unknown land to find stones!

[He took a long, slow, deep breath through his beak and held it, before letting it out. Siiiigh.] You too?

[Ravenshead unintentionally takes a step back when Peter jumps down. No offense, Peter, you're just... awfully big for a bird.] I... after a fashion, I suppose. I wasn't in a battle though--I believe I was balancing my checkbook. [He smiles a little.] A bit less exciting.

Otherwise, yes. This sort of thing doesn't usually happen when attending to my finances.

[He considers the situation. There are many questions that could use answering.] What precisely are you?

[peter_the_phnx]

[It’s okay. He’s used to people giving him weird looks. When he went to New Granseal he got picked on by triplets because he was a big bird...]

[He was, however, unsure what a Check Book... was. In his mind he imagined this human trying to balance a book on his head. Bu then the term finances was used, so clearly he’s a shop keep of some sort and he was balancing his ledger! Oh, that made more sense. Checking his ledge then.]

I suppose balancing your ledger is better than battling. Oh, me? I’m Peter, the Phoenix. [his winger came to his chest and he bowed to the man. He hopes he doesn’t make a big deal. People call him Legendary back home and it flusters him.]

[guardian_doctor]

A ...phoenix? Named Peter? [Not the sort of name he'd ever expected to find on a phoenix. Nor had he realized phoenixes were real, but...]

Ahem. I'm Dr. Ravenshead. [He's not entirely certain how to greet someone without hands to shake. After a brief moment of puzzling over it, he settles for a mix of a half-bow and a small wave.]

You said you don't know where we are either, correct? Have you any ideas how we could find out? I tried asking a few passers-by, but they seemed eager to avoid me.

[peter_the_phnx]

Yes? that is my name. [He said softly, as if to say ‘what else should I be named?’, hi head tilted. But the man introduced himself, so he nodded his head in return, a bow. People don’t shake hands unless you are sealing a deal, so it’s okay. He didn’t offer his wing or anything.]

Nice to meet you, Doctor! the medical kind? [he asked, curious, before glancing off to where the girl had ran off.]

I don’t know! The woman I was talking to said something about an Isle? Empanada or something? Emphysema? I don’t know. It doesn’t sound like anywhere on Permecia. Oh! [He held up the journal she handed to him and frowned, wings wrapped around it.]

‘You can find your kind with this’, she said...

Yes, medical doctor. [He confirms, before looking at his own journal.] I wonder what she meant by that. I'm fairly certain I'm not a phoenix. Perhaps there are other, ah, "visitors" about?

[He chuckles slightly.] It's probably not the "Isle of Emphysema", that seems just a tad unlikely.

[peter_the_phnx]

Like a healer, who doesn’t travel? Very nice. Always handy. [he said with a strong level of approval and a nod. As for the journal thing, he just glanced at it, not opening it.] You don’t look like a Phoenix, no. Maybe she meant people from the mainland? You’re strangely dressed, but you could be, what, Granseal? New Granseal?

[CLEARLY he just thinks you’re from home.] I knew I heard her wrong. It’s an island of some sort though. You can feel it in the air.

[guardian_doctor]

I don't know what a "Granseal" is. I'm American. [Said more absentmindedly than anything.]

That's "island air"? I thought it meant it was going to rain. [Eyes the sky doubtfully. Being coastal would explain the salty tang in the breeze though...]

[peter_the_phnx]

Huh. I don’t know what an American is. [Interesting. Was that a different land? How very interesting. oh, but the matter at hand. He sniffed the air, and smiled as well as a bird can]

Mmm, yes. An Island. Not landlocked. You can catch the feel from all sides and not just one. Water isn’t far from here either. [he bristled a bit though, feathers fluffing in annoyance] I was a few days journey from the ocean. This is just very strange. Unsettling.

[witcraft]

i. [caught in some vines somewhere, a broken hot-air-balloon-like contraption by her side as she sighs deeply and unsuccessfully tries to pull herself out of the wreckage] ...well, this is just great.

ii. [so, you were injured in an enemy attack... and now you're being treated by a 19th-century witch. except she's technologically a few centuries behind even in her own world, so maybe more like 16th-century or something.] Hmm, it's too bad we don't have any eye of newt... let me see the injury, would you?

iii. [the crew has indeed found a new island! ...but since it seems to be largely mountainous terrain, sieglinde is just going to fidget in her wheelchair and frown at her bound feet] Oh... I suppose I'll just be staying here, then.

[To say Rika was excited to be outside was an understatement. There was so much to do, so much to see! She was sure that Seed allowed her out here for the very reason that the poem told her about. When she was done, she would return to Seed and let it know all about what happened during her task. She wasn't worried at all about waking up here.

It only excited her more when the first being she saw was Peter, a being she'd never even learned about yet. And he talked!]

God Volcanon? I never heard of that god before. [She seems interested to learn about him.] Are you sure this isn't a way to help this 'Bowie'?

OMG Someone who knows SF2, let me love you. Though I can't say I know Rika... sry

[Of course he talked! He’s pretty smart for a bird! He huffed, looking down at the human who spoke. He bounced a bit, then hopped down off the fountain and balanced on the edge of the base. His head tilted, looking at her and her.]

I’m honestly not sure how this is going to help at all! There was so much still to do. We were in the middle of battle--how do you not know of Volcanon? [that last part was surprising, but then again a lot of humans were a little slow about the upper gods...]

She's from another Genesis game: Phantasy Star 4. These two games were my LIFE for years lol

[Well, not really human... her ears kind of give it away, being pointed and with black ends.]

Maybe the ruby or 'Davy Jones' could help. If a God allowed you to be brought here for this reason, it's possible.

I still haven't learned all there is in the world. Seed has recently been saying that it would be better if I could see for myself. I never even heard about you before.

Oh! I always wanted that one! never got to play it though.

[more human than him. The fact that she looked like someone who could be from home did help a bit.]

[He was already ON a quest though, this new one wasn’t what he needed to be doing right now, was it?] Is Davy Jones a God of this area? A demon? I’ve never heard of him before.

[wait... she doesn’t know of HIM? Aww. He kind of smiled and bowed his head, modest.] Me? I’m Peter. [He bowed, wing held over his middle as he did.] The Phoenix.

I don't know. I haven't heard of him either, until today. It's exciting!

My name's Rika. It's very nice to meet you, Peter. You're very pretty. [All the colors!] What does 'phoenix' mean?

It is exciting, though it comes at such a bad time... [oh! Pretty? He bashfully scratched a claw at the stone he was standing on. Shhh, don’t say nice things like that.] Thank you. I wouldn’t say I was pretty though. You should see me when I’m molting, or when I’m younger. Talk about awkward. Oh, but... Phoenix is a legendary bird where I am from. Born of fire. I’m one of a kind.

[W-WOW. How rude! He looked down at his feathers and eyes darkened a bit.]

E-excuse me? [WHAT was wrong with his feathers!? And... who was Marco. He puffed up a bit, standing taller. if he thinks his feathers look bad NOW he should see him in his other stages...] I happen to like these feathers!

[this is what he gets for roosting on a strange ship...]

[UH. What is that? ...You're probably a demon. Ok, maybe his first idea was right after all.]

...The fire. I was under the impression there'd be less "quaint town" and more fire.

I'm one of a kind too. Are you from Motavia or Dezolis? What was happening before you arrived here?

[He did mention battle. She wondered if it was because of the malfunctions that had started to happen.]

[he doesn’t even LIKE considering himself legendary, even if he has been around for a very long time. But it felt strange to not be heard off. Perhaps this young one lives somewhere weird. Those names weren’t anything he knew...]

I... I’m from Bedoe and the Temple of Volcanon. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of where you’re from. We were leaving Creeds place, do you know Creed? The group of us got hit on our way to our next destination... [his left wing moved left as he said] One minute I was shooting a gale of wind to a witch to cast her away, the next I was here.
