Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! [Shishio actually stops puffing on his pipe long enough to pay attention to her, slightly amused by the question.]

I'm afraid that I'm apparently not a very good mentor when it comes to swordsmanship. My last protege and I had a falling out.

[He takes one last puff before putting it away and standing up, one hand on his scabbard.]

...Still, I suppose a little bit of exercise would do me some good. Attack as you will, girl.

A: Aboard a ship, any ship

[Tohru has no idea how to operate a sailboat of any shape or size. He does, however, know how to follow instructions, and 'check the ropes to make sure they're in good condition' is a perfectly easy instruction to follow. No one ever said he wasn't allowed to explore the ship while he did the checking.]

[Driving a boat is like driving a car, right? Right. At least it looks that way. Did you let this guy take the helm? If not, you might want to pull him away from it before he crashes into something.]

Hanging out on the ship:

I suppose I'll have to invest in a strong anesthetic, sooner or later. The salty air certainly does do a number on old wounds. Though I suppose my entire body is pretty much an old wound.

[He sucks in a deep drag from his pipe, before blowing a few smoke rings.]

It's been a very long time since I last went to sea. Then, at least the boat had an iron hull. This is far inferior.

Fighting the Navy:

[Shishio had taken the initiative to divert the Naval ambush they discovered. Not out of any real altruism for his crew or drive to be a hero. Just because it had been a while since he got a real workout. By the time the crew pulls up alongside the strangely silent Naval vessel, he's waiting for them on the deck.]

Ah, you've all finally gotten here.

[He's covered in blood, as is the deck, the riggings, the mast, and just about every surface.]

I already tossed all the remains into the sea. It was a bit of work, but I think the idea of a deserted, bloody ship is more mysterious. A bit more theatrical, don't you think?

[his stance is open, the tip of Shuusui low to the floor - the kind of stance an expert can move out of in any direction, attack or defense as needed. Zoro nods to let Kuina have the first move, if she wants it.]

[ That's certainly a different stance than she's used to. Different from the Zoro she knows, different from the adults she's fought.

But if he was going to give her the first move, she'd take it. ] All right, then let's go! [ She starts off with a quick lunge and a thrust. It was precise, and quicker than a girl her age should be able to pull off - quicker than a normal adult, even... but Zoro hasn't faced normal adults in a long time. ]

I don't need a mentor. But you're a skilled swordsman, right? [ She sets her hand on Wadou Ichimonji's hilt. It's her personal sword, and a blade of legendary quality. Try not to be too jealous. ] I just need to practice against strong opponents. [ Or else she'll never surpass Zoro. ]

[he takes the smallest step to his left and swings his blade up just enough to block - to give her sword a tap and then a second to push it away to the side. Zoro's intent is to let her get a momentum going, first, before he really shows anything he's learned.]

Hit the red line...? Crash queen? Zones? Pacifist Ocean? [ WHAT THE HECK ARE ALL OF THESE TERMS AND WHAT DO THEY MEAN? ]

[ She doesn't let this much deter her. She aimed to strike true, but she also didn't actually expect it to hit. She continued with several overhead strikes, coming in strong and rapidly. It used to be able to push Zoro to the defensive, but she would see how he handled it now. ]

[for now he simply blocks each strike with the shortest, most efficient moves, but what differs from when he was a kid is that he's giving no ground. In fact, after the first step to absorb her blow, his feet haven't moved at all. In order to keep up with her, though, he takes the hilt in both hands to maneuver it more quickly.

Is that the tug of a small smile at the corner of his mouth?]

[He blinked, surprised as she repeated terms everyone generally knows. At LEAST know what the pacific ocean is, kid... come on.] Wait, you’ve never heard of any of that?

Me? I'm just a burned old man, now. I do know my way around a sword, though.

[His stance is pretty casual for a guy about to spar. He seems to be daring her to attack him, judging by the smile on his face.]

Come on then, child. Let's see you take some initiative.

[ For Kuina, this is fun, in a way. It's not often she's sparred against stronger opponents. And facing a stronger opponent will surely help her get better.

On the other hand, this is Zoro, and he looks like he's having way too easy of a time with this. So her expression is halfway between "Yay fun sword fight" and "Why aren't you being pushed back yet?" She might have been prepared for this, but to see it in action is still a blow to the ego.

So she's going in with a few stronger moves now, quick combinations of strikes meant to push past somebody's defenses. ]

Well, the Red Line is the continent that divides the oceans. But you've got the four Blues and the Grand Line, I've never heard of a Pacifist Ocean.

A) Pick an island, any island

[Gray is in a pub somewhere on one of the many islands around and low and behold he's managed to strip off all his clothes, minus his boxers. He jumps up and knocks his drink over, shaking his fist in a threating, yet comical, manner at someone who made an innocent comment about it]

What was that?! For the last time I'm not a pervert!

B) Freezing things is a good idea

[Is this your ship? Because if it is, Gray just froze a good portion of the deck's floor, so watch your step. The ship's mast is also covered in crystallized ice and may or may not be damaged. He probably got into a brawl with a crew member]

All right, then. [ It seems like he's taking this pretty casually, so she doesn't bother to specify points or rules. She draws her sword and takes a stance - a pretty typical kendo stance, really, but solid. ] I hope you're ready! [ She'll go in with an overhead strike to gauge his reaction, and follow it up with a few more if that one's blocked. ]

[Okay...... this is weird. His brow stayed raised as he spoke carefully.] Hitting the red line just means going real fast. It’s not a location to me. And uh.... last I hear there were seven great seas, or something. I haven’t really been outside the Zones, so I’m not sure.

Alright, so... [he ran a hand through his hair, messin the light blue streak in it. Frowning.] So this place isn’t what it seems, or it’s a dream, or my brain is real messed up.

Heehh you did a pretty good job. [isn't really part of his crew but just sailing by himself, attention caught by the smoke. But he peers at the guy closely]

Are you a zombie or just an old guy with a really big wound?

Yeah! It's Empizza. But if you don't know what it is, I guess you're from some other place right?

You're really weird. [ Kuina, master of tact. ] Did you hit your head before you woke up here? [ That would explain things. ]

That's right. I'm from Shimotsuki... that's, ah, in East Blue.

We're still in East Blue, right? I've never heard of an "Empizza" before.

[He gave a snort at that, kind of a laugh maybe.] Yeah, I’ve heard that before, kid.

Uh... [he tried to glance over his shoulder then frowned more.] Actually? I got shot in the back, so I kind of think this is the Phoenix Witches resting grounds. The great beyond.

I'm not sure what a "zombie" is, but I suppose the second guess is close enough.
