Test Drive for February 2014 Apps

Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for

high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! Feel free to use one of the prompts below, or come up with something on your own! Comment around, have fun, and remember that any CR formed here does not carry over to the game!

♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

[Kazari's look has absolutely no sway over Toph. She has no idea what kind of expression he has on his face anyway.]

What kind of a person doesn't know what bending is anyway? [Toph rolls her eyes.]

I can make the ground move, and I can use it to fight. Fighting is the best.

I hate to break it to you, but with all the different worlds represented here, plenty of people don't know about things from specific ones.

[No one knew what a Greeed was, either.]

Good luck moving the ground when the ocean floor is miles below us.

[He has some wind attacks of his own in his true form, but there's no point in mentioning that as he's currently too weak to revert back into it.]

[She makes a face at that, because she can't move the earth under the sea, at least not like that.]

I don't really know anything about different worlds. [She shrugs a little bit.]

I don't like being on boats, I'd rather be on land.

Then why didn't you just stay on land rather than joining a crew?

[He knows there are plenty of reasons why she wouldn't, but he presses the matter all the same.]

It's better to learn more about your surroundings before jumping into a new situation anyway.

And get lynched by the townspeople? No thanks. Way more trouble than it's worth.

[It's not like she hasn't left the ground before, she just prefers it. She'll learn these surroundings soon enough anyway.]

What did I need to learn about that island? It didn't seem all that special. Besides, I'm not scared of this boat, it's just a stupid boat.

[His questions are kind of annoying.]

Did you get a book? Can you use it?

[It has a voice option, but she'd have to figure that part out.]

Have you spoken to anyone outside the crew?

[He's only got more questions to add, it looks like.]

Hmph. I have a book. I tried to get rid of it, but it showed up in my stuff again. What am I going to do with a dumb book?

[Seriously, whoever brought her here didn't really think that through, did they?]

Why, do you want it?

[Toph isn't going to tell him who she's spoken to, it's none of his business.]

[Would he want it? Sure. He might be able to find a use for it. It likely wouldn't stay with him, though. They worked funny that way.]

Nah.

You're supposed to communicate to other pirates with it. That's what it's for.

[She nods a little with a sarcastic smile.]

Oh sure, communicate with other pirates. Why don't I sit back and read this then?

[Toph holds up the book to her face for a moment before tossing it over her shoulder.]

Sounds like a book to me, no pirates.

[He watches her book fall, but doesn't go to retrieve it.]

That's why I said you need to learn how to use it.

[He takes out his own journal, flipping it open to a recent voice entry and activates the sound.]

[Toph gives him a bland look, but she's interested now.]

So the book talks. Even though it's just a book?

[A talking book is interesting, but why does she need to talk to other pirates?]

People talk into the book, and that can be shared with everyone in possession of one. That means all the pirates over all the ships.

[He snaps his book shut.]

That's what it does, and why it's worth holding onto.

[Toph waves her hand dismissively, but she gets to her feet and with a hand out on the railing of the ship she goes to collect her book again. She's sensitive to the distance of things when it comes to her hearing so she only needs to feel around for a moment or two before it comes back in hand.]

Can't blame me, who thinks to talk to a book anyway?

[She takes a few steps to find her spot again.]

Do you have a name or something?

Kazari.

[A cat-like smile follows, not that she can see it.]

I'm just helping you learn to ask around more. Can't hurt much.

I did just fine, I got on this boat didn't I?

[Defensive? A little bit. Toph doesn't like to get help, even in a foreign land. It'd be easier if she wasn't on a ship though.

She flops down in the same position she had been in before.]

That doesn't take all that much skill, does it?

[He shouldn't tease her, not if he's trying to make allies, but she's just being so snotty about things.]

How many other crews did you check out first?

[Toph shrugs at him.]

What difference does that make? If I don't like it, I'll just go somewhere else.

True, true.

[He intended to do that himself if this crew didn't work out.]

Still, shouldn't you do a little research first? Unless you were in a hurry.

Research is boring. You sound like Katara. Don't you like a little adventure?

And you sound like someone who rushes into things without thinking.

Adventures can be fun [He guesses...] but if you end up getting yourself into trouble because you didn't take a couple moments to see what you're up against, then it loses the fun factor real quick.

If I can get into trouble, I can get out of it. I like to have fun. Adventures are fun.

[That's really all there is to it. Toph shrugs her shoulders again.]

Overconfidence has brought down many a hero.

But somehow I'm not seeing that as something you really care about. It's my cautious nature. It just doesn't mesh with that sort of attitude.

Good thing I'm not a hero. You must have a really boring life then!

[He snorts at that.]

Maybe I do. Truly, I live a dull and meaningless existence.

[Toph grins and points at him.]

Don't worry, I'll teach you how to have fun.
