Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! Feel free to use one of the prompts below, or come up with something on your own! Comment around, have fun, and remember that any CR formed here does not carry over to the game!

♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

♦ Arrr, here be buried treasure, but not all that glitters is gold! Will ye be telling your mateys what ye found, or keeping it for yourselves?

I mean I got a power.

[No use hiding it. Better if people know, actually. None of this stupid 'skin condition' bs. Besides, here? People needed to know. So they could avoid anything happening.]

But it ain't what I'd call "cool."

Eh, not so much. I guess you could say I'm a jack-of-all-trades, like most Outlaws in space.

Though most Outlaws haven't saved the galaxy from a massive threat. Even if I didn't get any actual proof of it, yet.

[caster_blaster]

Oh yeah? Well, what can you do?

[She says it as she holds up her hand. Gloved, so there's no danger.]

I get it all. Memories, abilities, powers if someone's got 'em. The memories an' just physical abilities stay -- like muscle memory stuff. But the powers don' long.

Longer I hold onto someone, more I get. More I keep.

Not at all! It's merely the truth. Nothing soothes tired eyes quite as well as the sight of such a beautiful flower amidst all this tumult and turmoil.

[It's so rare that someone actually indulges him, so he's positively beaming and sparkling with joy and trying his best to hide it behind his mug as he sips at the coffee. He may even try to scoot his chair a little closer. Yes, that seems like something he might be able to get away with.]

So don't bemoan your luck just yet. It would be cruel for it only to be mine that takes a turn for the better.

So if someone was a martial arts master, and you touch them, you're a martial arts master? That sounds pretty awesome to me.

[Rogue smiles a little more. She likes being paid attention to, likes being flirted with. And flirting back.

It makes her feel normal. Like there's not something actually wrong with her.

So what if she can't do more than just flirt? It's a break from the mess everything's been lately.]

Friend of mine said she'd bring me luck.

[...Not that Gambit was really a friend. But it was complicated. That made it sound easy.]

Maybe he wasn' so wrong after all.

Sounds like it, don' it?

[Because in theory, it was amazing. There was a world of skills, all literally at her fingertips. Anything she wanted to be good at, she could be. She only had to find the right person to touch.]

But it hurts people. If it's just a tap, just unsteadies 'em. Anythin' more? Well.

One guy took my arm once. Just t' help me up when I fell. Let go pretty quick 'cause it hurt. Still nearly wound up in a coma.

[She'd learned a little control since then, but there wasn't a lot of opportunity to practice. The professor didn't want her using her powers unless she had to.]

[Ringabel starts an entry in his journal for "Gene Starwind the Outlaw." It may not be an Asterisk, but he can sort of hear that capital letter, so it's worth a few notes.

That second statement gives him pause, though.]

Don't count it saved until you have that proof, my friend.

[His whole demeanor immediately sobers. If their situations are in any way similar, it may explain how they've both found themselves in a place like this.]

Especially now that we've passed into another world.

I've been to a lot of other worlds, though. This is actually pretty nice, all things considered. I just miss technology.

[caster_blaster]

Can't you...I don't know, train it? Learn to not automatically switch it on?

'M years away from bein' able t' do that. If I ever can.

[Because, theoretically, it was possible.

Just like, theoretically, Scott would someday not need his glasses to control his eyes.

But Scott had been working on his for a lot longer than she had, and they were both far from having that kind of control.]

See there? Light at the end of the tunnel. Hell, I'll help you out with it, if you want.

Granted, I'm not sure how, but it's not the first time I accepted a task before I made a plan. Flying by the seat of my pants is kinda' my thing.

[...And there is the skeptical Southern tomboy look. The raised eyebrow that says it all.]

Y'know, I think I'll pass.

Woah. Yeah, that sounds, uhm... extreme. [Though she had been chased and nearly eaten by wolves, nearly fell off a cliff, chased by a giant snow monster, DID fall off a cliff, and had also turned into an ice sculpture, that still didn't match up to all that Gene said he'd been through. And she believes him, he has the scars to prove it!]

...Wait, what's a life pod? Like some sort of sailboat? [She's assuming this since he'd said he was escaping pirates.]

[Ringabel sets his coffee aside and stands long enough to offer an elegant bow.]

Ringabel, at your service. Your knight in shining armor, your shield, your song, your healing spell. Whatever you may need, that's the only name you'll need to call.

[This is literally the farthest he's gotten without a "shut up, Ringabel" in months, perhaps even more than a year. It's wonderful and he couldn't ask for a more lovely conversation partner. Well, save for the one who'd be telling him to shut up, but her perfect, angelic face has yet to be seen in this world.]

Shinin' armor, huh? Can' say I've met too many o' those.

[So what if most of the guys she liked either tried to kill her or she thought tried to kill her.

This one? Hasn't. So she can enjoy this for all it's worth.]

It's certainly a pleasure.

I think you missed my point. If you saved your world, why are you here? What happened to the world you were in before? I know I for one shouldn't be here at all, yet here I am.

[Ringabel makes a few more notes and waits for the ink to dry before he puts his journal away.]

I had a destination in mind and this certainly isn't it.

[She finds herself looking down at her hands as she listens. She wouldn't say that Elsa hadn't had anywhere else to go, Anna had always been welcoming to her, but... Well, their kingdom wasn't, for that brief amount of time... And having someone to help teach her how to control her powers, how not to hurt anyone. That would have been good for Elsa. It probably would still be good for Elsa. But...]

So, uhm. Does he ever let people without powers come too? Not to be taught or to... to hone in on any of it, just... Just so that they can still be close to someone they love, because that person has powers?

...We don' have any non-mutants living at the Institute.

[It's an interesting thought, though. But she catches the word.]

That's what we're called where I'm from. People with powers. Mutants.

[But. Back to the real point.]

But the ones who've got family see 'em a lot. Closer they live, the better. Kurt goes home every summer, so does Jean. And over breaks, too.

...I doubt the professor'd mind, though. If someone really wanted t' come. We... haven't had anyone ask before.

[caster_blaster]

[He blinks in surprise, genuinely taken aback.]

Eh? What? What did I say?

[caster_blaster]

I got taken after all of that. Months after. I was just out on a job, got trashed in a bar, and woke up here.

I didn't plan for this either, but I figure it's just meant to be. Obviously this place needs Gene Starwind very badly.

[caster_blaster]

It's like a lifeboat, but for a spaceship.

The pleasure is all mine.

[He takes his seat again and surreptitious scoots the chair even closer.]

And what a shame it is that so many ladies I've met in this place come from worlds that are severely lacking in chivalrous gentlemen. I happen to have several suits of shining armor to suit whatever occasion arises, so perhaps I can make up for that.
