♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

♦ Arrr, here be buried treasure, but not all that glitters is gold! Will ye be telling your mateys what ye found, or keeping it for yourselves?

Well...

[Gene leans against the nearest railing, looking up as he tries to come up with an explanation that isn't too daunting.]

Maybe "sail" is the wrong term. There's no wind or water out there to sail on, you're just floating in empty space. No gravity or air either, it's a total vacuum. So you need to be in a sealed ship, that uses special engines to push you along. Just getting off the planet is hard, since you're pushing against all that gravity yanking you down.

[Rogue arches an eyebrow, and her lips quirk into just a bit of a smile. He hit the magic word. He called her cute.]

...Jus' for that?

[She makes a motion to a spot near her little campfire.]

Nah. Have some. Ain't the best, but I never said I could cook. Jus' that I could hunt.

Woo-hoo!

[He raised his arms in triumph before scooting over closer and grabbing some for himself. The man's clearly got no manners, as proven by his rampant consumption of the meat.]

This is fantastic, are you kidding?

Never really learned how t' cook, but, hey. It's hot.

[Hot, fresh, and at least cooked to the point where it's not going to kill her. She knows that much. Which is about all she knows.]

I'm not too bad at it, myself. Not exactly a chef, but when you live alone long enough you have to learn.

Never lived alone, so I never really learned. Still, picked up a few things from livin' with Irene.

Friend of yours from back home?

[He isn't entirely certain whether to be offended by that or not. After all, he's no longer the stick in the mud he once was. Still, there's a bit of a line to be drawn between "responsible hero behavior" and "things one might expect more of a degenerate vagrant" and drinking oneself into senselessness in a less than reputable establishment falls firmly into the latter category.]

I think I beg to differ, but that aside...

[That aside...what, exactly? Gene doesn't seem to know any more than he does about what's going on. In fact, he seems to know less. Ringabel sighs and crosses his arms. So much for intelligence gathering.]

My... My mom.

[Or used to be.

Or was supposed to be.

Or... Another complicated matter.]

...Ah. Sorry, if it's a sore subject. I can't really remember mine.

In any case, looks like we're gonna' have to learn to all get along. I hear we've got bigger issues to worry about than morality. We seem to be pirates, each one of us. Way I heard, local law enforcement doesn't care what we say we are, we're still pirates to them.

Makes me wish I had my grappler ship.

More just... weird. Like, really weird. But... not important.

[She shakes her head, trying to smile just a bit.]

Never mind, really. Isn' important.

[She listens intently, looking slightly in awe as she thinks about it.] That's amazing... I bet it's really beautiful being up there in space, too...

Wait, you said you were escaping pirates. There are pirates in space?

Oh. Well... I'd like to think so. [She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, giving a one-shouldered little shrug.] I'm really happy to have her as a sister, too. Even after the whole frozen kingdom and iced over fjords and me turning into an ice sculpture thing, really I'm just glad we're talking again and she's able to control her powers a little more easily.

I would say I'm one of a kind, but I'm afraid we can't all be so singularly spectacular as yourself.

[He's seen one too many of himself at this point. It sort of puts a damper on one's ego.]

But enough about me. I'm far more interested in hearing about you.

[He finds his coffee again and leans forward to listen. To his credit, he looks (and is!) genuinely interested in hearing what she has to say, despite how ridiculous he's sounding about it.]

It makes sense, right? Every time people discover a new frontier, there are people who want to take advantage of it. For us, those people are the pirate guilds. They hijack ship cargoes, do ransoms, the whole shebang.

I'm still not a huge fan of BEING a pirate, but I suppose I'll get over it.

Thanks for the food, though. Seriously. I did get a little full of myself, back then.

Frozen kingdom, huh?

[Now, that gives her some scope. She can imagine it. "Kingdom" sounds a bit strange, but... Girl didn't really know what electricity was. Might work out, strange as this place was.]

That's... Not too surprisin'. I mean. Powers like that. They... go pretty haywire.

[Rogue chuckled a little, shaking her head.]

I'm nothin' too special.

[Now that? That was a bold-faced lie.

"Special" was what the Xavier Institute was all about.]

Born an' raised in Mississippi, go t' school in upstate New York. 'S about all there is t' tell.

I grew up with Good Ol' Boys. Someone writin' a check they can' cash? Pretty common.

[And she chuckles a bit at it, leaning back as she takes another bite of the cooked bird.]

Always funny t' see 'em fall on their ass, have t' say.

Ha ha! Well, I do plenty of that.

You know, most people don't think it, but I am actually pretty competent when it comes to getting things done. I just get in a lot of trouble when left to my own devices, if there's nobody to keep me grounded. Back on the ship it was Jim, and then my crew.

Most certainly not! Though...

[He tips his head to the side and taps his chin.]

I suppose it's possible it's a case of "a hero's job is never done." After all, if a lovely lady like yourself has found herself displaced, I would be remiss if I didn't come to her aid.

[He bows deeply. He'd probably take her hand and try to kiss it, but he's occasionally not as foolish as he looks. Occasionally.]

Ringabel, at your service.

Hey, I totally buy you'd be jus' fine huntin' a bounty. Huntin' to eat's just differen'.

[Because there it wasn't a "bring in alive" or "bring in dead in any condition."

It was probably a bad thing she already didn't care much who she associated with here. Bounty hunters, thieves, pirates... Whatever didn't just shoo her off.]

I thought a forest would be easier, without all the buildings and vehicles and human traffic to get in the way.

Whole differen' worlds.

[She can't help but smirk again.]
