Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! Feel free to use one of the prompts below, or come up with something on your own! Comment around, have fun, and remember that any CR formed here does not carry over to the game!

♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

♦ Arrr, here be buried treasure, but not all that glitters is gold! Will ye be telling your mateys what ye found, or keeping it for yourselves?

I know what you mean by that, things generally have a way of ending up alright in the end for me, too. I mean, sometimes it takes quite a while to get there, but still, things turn out okay.

[She's not really used to shaking hands, so she's confused for a second when he holds his out. Oh, right. That's a thing. That people do sometimes. Instead of the whole bowing and curtsying thing. She takes his hand and shakes it with a smile then.]

I'm Anna! It's nice to meet you. And to catch you, I'm glad that happened too. How long were you in the water, anyway?

[caster_blaster]

Hm...Hard to say, really. I guess going by the sun, maybe a few hours? Kinda' lost track of time when I took a hit to the head.

[alovingheart]

Oh... Oh! Oh, no. You got hit in the head? Are you okay? You should probably sit down. Were you injured? [She says all this very quickly, bordering on panic-mode.]

[caster_blaster]

Look at me. Do I look like the sort of guy who buckles under a few injuries? This body is a road map of scars, pretty much.

[alovingheart]

[She settles down a little, looking at him as she's told before sighing.] Well, if you're sure...

[And he's right. She can tell just by looking at him that he's got a couple of scars, and she can't imagine how many else he might have that she can't even see.] ...Are they all from before you arrived here? [It doesn't really occur to her this might be a rude question to ask. After all, he's the one who brought up the scars, so...]

[caster_blaster]

[Thankfully, Gene has no tact, so he never expects it from other people.]

Considering the jobs I do, injury is just par for the course. It happens. Been shot, stabbed, nearly garrotted, nearly blown up a few times. Some bounties get pretty rough.

The worst I got all at once, though. Crashed in a life pod, escaping pirates. Landing system didn't work right, so I got torn up pretty bad. Barely dragged myself to medical help.

Woah. Yeah, that sounds, uhm... extreme. [Though she had been chased and nearly eaten by wolves, nearly fell off a cliff, chased by a giant snow monster, DID fall off a cliff, and had also turned into an ice sculpture, that still didn't match up to all that Gene said he'd been through. And she believes him, he has the scars to prove it!]

...Wait, what's a life pod? Like some sort of sailboat? [She's assuming this since he'd said he was escaping pirates.]

[caster_blaster]

It's like a lifeboat, but for a spaceship.

[alovingheart]

A spaceship? As in... stars, moon, celestial bodies? That kind of space?

[caster_blaster]

Exactly! Nice to meet somebody who actually knows what I'm talking about.

[alovingheart]

Well, the space part, yeah. But I didn't know you could sail there.

[caster_blaster]

Well...

[Gene leans against the nearest railing, looking up as he tries to come up with an explanation that isn't too daunting.]

Maybe "sail" is the wrong term. There's no wind or water out there to sail on, you're just floating in empty space. No gravity or air either, it's a total vacuum. So you need to be in a sealed ship, that uses special engines to push you along. Just getting off the planet is hard, since you're pushing against all that gravity yanking you down.

[She listens intently, looking slightly in awe as she thinks about it.] That's amazing... I bet it's really beautiful being up there in space, too...

Wait, you said you were escaping pirates. There are pirates in space?

[caster_blaster]

It makes sense, right? Every time people discover a new frontier, there are people who want to take advantage of it. For us, those people are the pirate guilds. They hijack ship cargoes, do ransoms, the whole shebang.

I'm still not a huge fan of BEING a pirate, but I suppose I'll get over it.

[alovingheart]

Thankfully the good thing about being a pirate here is you don't have to do those things. You know, hijack and ransom, and all of that. Mostly my crew just sails around exploring and hunting for treasure!

[caster_blaster]

Do you actually make any money?

[alovingheart]

Uh. Well, not me personally. I think the crew has money, though? [She looks thoughtful for a second, because she's never actually asked anyone about that. It's never been something she's had to worry about. Not back home, nor while she's been here.] Yeah, we must have some, because we restock supplies and things every so often.
