Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for

high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! ♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

♦ Arrr, here be buried treasure, but not all that glitters is gold! Will ye be telling your mateys what ye found, or keeping it for yourselves?

[ Hey now, she's plenty disciplined! She's skilled enough to take out normal adults, at any rate. Even if it's pretty clear this guy isn't a "normal" anything. ] Do you always talk when you fight? [ She follows that up with a thrust instead - to see how he'll handle this one. ]

I enjoy a good bit of conversation with my exercise. You'd be surprised how useful a psychological weapon the right words can be.

[His hand lashes out, catching her thrust between his fingers.]

Is this really all that you're capable of? This isn't even exercise, this is play.

[ Yeah, okay, wow. She picked him because she figured he'd be strong, but this is kind of... outclassed.

But still, his words reach her, and her ego won't take it lying down. ] No, it's not! [ She twists her sword as she pulls back - nobody would even attempt to keep close to a sword's blade as she did that - and would follow up with a series of quick combination strikes meant to break through a defense. ]

Tell me. Kuina. What is a sword, to you? What is the purpose of it?

[He draws his hand back, before finally drawing his sword parrying her blows. His back eventually hits the railing on the side of the ship. After a quick hop, he balances on top of it, daring her to come up after him.]

You want to grow stronger? Why? What's the purpose of your swordsmanship?

[ Follow him up there she does. She's used to structured matches - a dojo, a field, not hopping up onto railing - but she's skilled enough to handle it well enough. ]

That reason's simple enough. I'm going to be the world's greatest swordsman. [ She punctuates that statement with a few slashes - the first one is off-balance from being up on a rail, but she adjusts quickly for the rest that follow. ]

[Shishio taps backwards along the rail with practiced ease, taking a few low-speed counter-strikes with the back of his blade.]

Just to be the best? Not a bad ideal, if lacking in vision.

[ Lacking in vision? Well, at least he's not telling her that it's an impossible dream for a girl.

She blocks his counter-strikes, as they're not Shishio's fastest. Still, it takes a good amount of concentration to make sure they don't throw her off balance. She does find time to add in something, though. ] It's a promise I made. And I intend to keep it! [ She goes in for an upward slice following his last strike. ]

[Shishio bends at the waist for her big attack, before striking the railing beneath her hard enough to shake her off it.]

I've heard many promises. I only believe in actions.

[ And shake her off of it he does. She had caught onto the art of fighting on a precarious surface like that, but lacked the practical experience to stay balanced for something like that. But she could at least make it controlled - when she felt herself losing balance, she threw herself off of the railing and back onto the deck, tucking into a roll and coming up aside her opponent, sword lashing out towards his legs. ] That's why I'm here! [ And why she's such a training freak. ]

[Shishio raised his legs as the blade sailed under his feet. Mid-jump, he pulled a small, wooden back-scratcher out, swinging the heavier end of it down at the back of her neck.]

Then the first thing you'll learn is that ego can be painful.
