Test Drive for December 2013 Apps

Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for [community profile] high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! Feel free to use one of the prompts below, or come up with something on your own! Comment around, have fun, and remember that any CR formed here does not carry over to the game!

See you during the application round!

♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

♦ NAVY SHIPS! Cannon fire! Guns and explosions! It's a Pirates vs. Navy battle! **HINT: This might be a good one to try this time around... :D

"So... you're telling me that there's two of me?" Well, shit. It just got twice as swag up in here. Dave will have to say hello to little him eventually. It doesn't sound like his younger self is anywhere nearby at the moment though, so he won't bother looking.

Dave listens to most of what Dirk has to say. The information is useful, if a bit excessive. Truth be told, he'd rather hear this stuff from his bro than read about it in a book anyway. The jewel interests him, though he doesn't show it. Dave files that tidbit away for later. Whether it has some mysterious power or not it's probably rare and valuable and he wouldn't mind getting his hands on it.

He takes the journal out and gives it a precursory glance, though he doesn't do more than skim the introduction. No need to read it thoroughly now that he knows what it contains. "How do you use this to communicate?"

People don't pass around books here, do they? That's lame. Dave has a feeling he's going to miss technology. No more laptops, cell phones, or cameras. No twitter, facebook, or tumblr. No more movies, websites, or blogs. How is he going to survive? You don't just take the owner of a media empire and put him in a world with no media. What is he going to do here? Run a newspaper?

On second thought, that might not be a bad idea. Black and white SBAHJ comics would be sweet. He could make them look all retro and shit.

Dirk's grateful for the fact that Dave doesn't seem to catch on to the fact that he's nervous as all hell, or at least is cool enough not to point it out. Though at the same time it feels all hells kinds of awkward and he's not sure how to feel about it. He'd wanted more than anything to see his bro, that's why he agreed to play the damned game in the first place. But there's that bit of doubt in his mind that wonders if the excitement is a one way strip. Of course the younger Dave was just as nervous as him, cause unlike Dirk, he was actually raised by his bro so had some sort of a comparison to make. But his Dave managed to get through life just fine without him-and this train of thought is fucking stupid and will cause him nothing but trouble, so he stops it right the fuck there.

"You get used to it after a while, if it doesn't drive you up the fucking wall first." Because god knows Dirk has enough experiences with other hims running around and making shit even more complicated.

"It's magic, nothing else to say about it. You can write or draw in it and whatever you put on the page will appear in everyone else's journal, or you can speak to it and it'll record down what you say so everyone else can hear it." They have a moment, so Dirk pulls out his own journal and steps just a bit closer to show him what he means, flipping through a few of the old entries.

There's the sound of something heavy landing behind him, and Dirk doesn't even bother looking up. He knows it's Sawtooth, the seven foot bot figuring his recon would be put to best use near the kid since he's distracted as all fuck. Can't have any Navy sneaking up and ruining shit.

Underneath his calm exterior Dave is disoriented. First he thought he was dead. Now he's coming to terms with the fact that he seems to be stuck in something resembling a 15th century port town. It's not that he hasn't noticed Dirk's awkwardness, but he's been too preoccupied with his own dilemma to mention it. Besides, he's had decades to master his cool guy facade. He wouldn't seem outwardly excited even if he were fucking ecstatic.

The magical journal sounds pretty farfetched, but Dave watches while Dirk flips through it. It's an odd form of communication, but Dave will find a way to make it work. Maybe he can use it like a personal blog. At least it's more convenient than a newspaper.

Sawtooth's landing gets his attention. Dave has ignored the robot so far. He doesn't understand why it's here. It only takes a glance for him to recognize some of the parts he left lying around his apartment and realize Dirk must have built it. Pretty impressive. The robot has a point though. Standing around in the street probably isn't the smartest thing to do.

"Why don't we find a more comfortable place to talk?" Dave nods toward the nearest bar. Then he turns and walks toward it, assuming Dirk will follow.

Dirk immediately looks unsure for a moment, glancing wearily in the direction of the bar. He'd been busy as fuck before running into Dave, and for good reason. "Yeah, probably not the best place. Only safe place right now would be back on my ship or out of the open. A few weeks back one certain Shounen Jump ninja thought it would be a fucking great idea to burn part of this city down. The Navy stepped in and took over the whole fucking island, we've all had to find a new supply port since then. Bad news is we know this is where newbies always show up, so some asshole got the brilliant idea of starting a god damned full on battle with the navy to try and take the island back by force. Despite the fact that the residents here barely put up with us in the first place seeing as how we're all immediately labeled as pirates when we arrive. So, yeah. Don't think waltzing into a bar would be the best move right now."

He finally turns his attention to Sawtooth, just a glance and having all the data transferred back onto the screen on his shades. "Looks like most of the ones in this area have been cleared out for the moment, which is why we haven't had our asses busted yet. We can bail the fuck out of here back to the Sinewave if you want to just chill the fuck out and come to terms to all this shit. The rest of my crew out here can handle themselves without me, and I can leave Sawtooth behind to keep an eye on them just in case."

Because honestly, he didn't even want to fucking come here in the first place. It was only to keep an eye on them and to check and see if any of his friends had shown up.

Dave stops in his tracks and turns back to Dirk. He isn't oblivious to the sounds of fighting in the city, though since they aren't in the midst of the fight it was easy for him to dismiss it as a street brawl. He had no idea there was a full on battle. That changes things.

"Right, so you're saying that the new arrivals automatically get labeled as pirates..." Not so difficult to believe. Back in this day and age people didn't travel much, so it'd be easy to label strangers as something threatening. "...and if the Navy controls the island they might just imprison all the newcomers they can get their hands on before they have a chance to set sail." The apparent abuse of power is nothing new to him. He fought against the Batterwitch's evil regime most of his life after all. "And you want to bail out and leave your men behind to deal with this mess?"

The last part comes out in a disapproving tone. Dave isn't sure what he dislikes more about this idea, the fact that his bro is so eager to leave his men behind or the way Dirk almost makes it sound like he needs a babysitter. Probably the latter. Dave doesn't want anyone to drop everything to tend to him. Like hell he's going to dignify that train of thought with a response though. "Protip, bro: never leave your men behind."

He tucks his journal back into his pocket. "We can talk later. For now, let's fight." The word fight has a value of 2+1+2+2+2 = 9, which is the same as Dave's sword, so it appears in his hand. Dave poses like a tool. For ironic effect, of course.

Fuck, his bro is the coolest guy in the world and nothing can convince Dirk otherwise of that, not even the shitty posing because to him it just looks awesome. But there's a bit of an insult there, enough of one for Dirk to let out a snort even as he's tightening his grip on his sword and getting ready to head out to where the navy bastards are again. "For the record, it's not necessarily my 'men' when my crew is 75% women and the only other guy stayed behind. And this is nothing to be concerned about. I wouldn't have brought them with me if I didn't have absolute faith in each and every one of them being able to take care of themselves against enemies so weak, I've only got the best. So I get your point, but I'd rather die than ditch someone who needs me."

Well, Codi he's still not so sure about but she'd seemed pretty damned insistent she knew what she was doing, not to mention that ridiculous super hero costume of hers. But Leo, Amelia and Tsukuyo could more than pull their own weight. But he knows what Dave means, and if his bro wants to fight then there's no way he's going to tell him otherwise. Back to the important matter at hand.

"The navy's going for less imprisonment, more execution ASAP. And that declaration was before some asshole had to go and assault one of their bases recently to make shit that much more peachy so I can just imagine how good of a mood they're in now. In any case, our main objective isn't to take out as many as we can, but to protect anyone who has no clue what the fuck is going on and clear out safe areas to make sure the navy doesn't get their hands on them." He'd rather leave the needless fighting to someone else, since technically they're the bad guys here.

"Really? Getting your pimp on already? Good job, bro." This is Dave's reaction to the revelation that 75% of Dirk's crew is female. He gives his bro a playful thumbs up. Dave isn't even remotely serious about the pimp thing, but it's probably going to come up often because his style of irony calls for it. He is glad to hear that Dirk has faith in his crew, though he still thinks it's unprofessional to leave them at the drop of a hat. He won't say anything about it though. It isn't bad enough to warrant reprimand and it seems his objections have already been noted. "Men, women, whatever. You know we don't do that politically correct bullshit."

Dave is aware of just how awful it would be to insinuate that Dirk shouldn't leave his women behind. He wasn't using the term men in a gender-specific manner. He's happy to learn that there are women who want to be pirates. When he forms his own crew he's totally going to let any and all women on board regardless of how strong they are. Nothing would make him happier than to have a crew primarily of women. Guys will have to prove themselves though, because Dave is kind of an asshole.

"If execution is what they're after let's give it to them." Because that pisses Dave right the fuck off and it gives him even more reason to get involved in this. Not everyone who arrives here will be able to defend themselves and he can't just stand by while the Navy executes innocent people. "Tell me which areas to clear out. I'll make sure they stay wide open."
