Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! ♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

[Ryoga had been an expert at getting lost, but this was a situation that took the cake. At times, he could traverse the sea itself and land on other continents without so much as noticing he was outside of Japan. It grew worse after the left Isla Empieza--to the point that he'd been to three different islands without so much as seeing another human being.

Kidd wouldn't have known any of that, but he would have certainly noticed the hand sticking out of the sand right where he last drove his shovel. The hand twitched, bit by bit, until its fingertips found a bit more solid of a stretch of sand to latch onto. Then, the hand pulled up a body, a treasure chest coming up with him as well.]

...Gah! Where the hell am I!? [Exclaimed Ryoga, clutching the treasure chest without realizing what it was. How did he get there? He tried blasting apart some of the sand to make himself a shelter and ended up burying himself. The fact that he was alive was a miracle in upon itself, but--]

You! Who're you!? [So, the question was posed of Kidd, who was even less likely to know who on Earth Ryoga was in the first place.]

[His thoughts turn introspective for a brief moment and he just smiles.]

Well the old man is a good guy, that's all! I've been eating there my whole life!

So, got any tips about this place? I get bored reading pretty quickly.

Not really, I just got here. The book mentioned something about finding a ship and sailing.

...Ah, crap. I've never sailed before. Stowed away on a few ships, but never that kind.

I don't know anything either, so I'll just have to find someone who does. I was on a boat a few times, but never driving it.

Well, I guess if you were a human, a lot of humans didn't know about nanomachines until the last half century or so anyway...

Most of what people think of as magic was just tricks though. Or things that were later explained by science.

And I have a fondness for sushi, but that doesn't mean I eat it every day. But then again... I've probably eaten a good portion of what is actually edible, and a number of things which are not.

[For a few moments Bridget glanced off into the distance as if actually seeing something before looking back at Naruto.] I don't recommend worms. They don't have any real flavor. [Trolling? Not? Very hard to tell.]

[Thank goodness, someone with at least some level of what she considered 'modern' communication. It didn't beat out telepathy quite yet but maybe in another few hundred years...]

Not really. It's just like a walkie but with writing as well as sound. I'm a little disappointed there isn't video yet but that took a good thirty or so years even in a place that didn't rely on rum to make water safe to drink.

[Bridget spotted a potential store and slowed to a stop so she could take a look through the little window.]

"Such flattery." Hawke tsk'd, though he was clearly amused. "It'll get you everywhere, you know." If there was one thing Hawke loved, it was compliments. Not that he needed them, with the size of his ego, but who even cared about that? "If you're not in the middle of anything, could I tempt you to join me for a drink? There's a tavern around here with ale to rival the best of the Hanged Man. I was just trying to find it again when your dog stopped me."

Science and I don't really get along too well.

[A moment of thought, and one of Murasa's hands turns greenish and transparent, shot through with grainy static. The air around it becomes much colder, and the odd aura she emits intensifies, becoming strange and unpleasant and feeling uncomfortably like death. Even the other patrons start to lean away, though few take notice of it otherwise.]

A lot of terms under the 'supernatural' umbrella are better at explaining things like me.

[With a flicker, her hand re-solidifies again much more quickly than it went all film grainy, and that aura returns to an acceptable level of weird. She seems to be looking at her hand with idle amusement.]

That was harder than it should've been. Booze must be kicking in.

I kinda get that feeling too, y'know? It's not the wildest thing that's happened to me lately!

[Makoto kept smiling as she hopped down from her perch on the statue. Brushing her hands together, she paused to take a good look at the person who'd been talking to her. Total stranger. Strange accent. Whatever conclusion she was coming to was quickly lost under a wave of curiosity.]

I guess you're not really from around this place either, huh? Guess that makes two of us.

How old are you exactly? Cause you really feel like an old man talking to his grandchildren.

Well, if that's the case, I'd have to welcome you. WELCOME TO THE LAND OF THE PIRATES!!!! [He was very cheerful, though his choice of words should already tell the man about the gravity of the situation.]

[Yes, it was quite a nice place to set her glass of water on when she's not drinking it, thanks. She just sort of jumps and stares down at him, blinking wide eyes a couple times and not sure what to make of the sudden body.

She has to fight the urge to press a hand to her face for that one-liner even if it's not directed at her. She just sort of watches him finish his beer and roll pieces of table off his shoulders like it was nothing.]

No, it's-- Are you alright?

[It's all she can think to ask because what else do you ask someone that caved in your table?]

[Naw, they got telepathy but it's exclusive to a particular clan. And the one Bridget reminds her of is from the clan.

She's staring down at the journal waiting for a response but when nothing comes immediately, her focus is back on Bridget.]

You can record sound with this?

[This would need a lot of studying later, if she's going to use it.]

I can't believe something that's normally simple and common is able to act as a communicator, with writing and sound. What is it powered by?

[A trickle of blood runs down the side of his head, causing him to rub a finger through it and look at it in the light.]

Ah, no big deal. Head wounds just bleed a lot, but they clot up quick. Not the first time I went through a table. Apparently this guy didn't like the intimations I made about his mother.

[He watches the large, incensed man leave. The two lock eyes for a moment.]

I was hopin' he was tougher, though. Guy his size should hit a lot harder.

[Not surprised he got hit then if he was taking shots at his mother. She sort of frowns a little until he mentions the fact that a big guy meant harder hits.]

Size isn't everything.

[She has a secret sort of smile as she says it and then offers her hand to help him up. Then she notices the blood on his fingers and that smirk drops back into concern while she hauls him onto his feet.

The crowd seems to have gone back to their own devices, like broken tables aren't all that uncommon.]

If you hit your head, there's a chance you could be concussed.

[There's a small, unworried shrug of his shoulders.]

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? I'm sure that's how brains work.

That doesn't mean there should be a second or third time.

[People that try and play off injuries are the worst. She's visibly irritated now and reminded of stubborn patients.]

Maybe it won't kill you but it there could be permanent damage. You should see a doctor.

I've been to plenty of prison medics.

[He tenses the chain between his wrist manacles with a small smirk.]

Trust me, that kinda' bedside manner will make anyone think twice about seeing doctors. Why do you care, anyway?

Nobody knows anything for certain. Not even the people who belong to this world. [His tone is about as filled with badly-suppressed irritation as it possibly can be. It's practically spilling over.]

All we have is shreds of information. It's just like -- [Oops, almost slipped up.]

With a thing like that- I can't say I blame him.

[Though she was smiling at the idea herself, obviously seeing the humor in it. If she'd been placed in Aya's role... there would have been no recovering from the shock of that suggestion]
