Test Drive for January 2014 Apps

Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for [community profile] high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! Feel free to use one of the prompts below, or come up with something on your own! Comment around, have fun, and remember that any CR formed here does not carry over to the game!

See you during the application round!

♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

[Only difference is the age REALLY. Sakura would have contempt for that too. Gross.]

Um, no, not really. It was just nearby me and I decided to bring it along.

... Should I?

[Aw, but she's still young! No turning into a piece of jerky randomly, promise. One eyebrow will lift a bit though. Sakura hadn't bothered yet?]

Only if you want to figure out who might know what's going on. I'm not exactly sure what connects them, but as far as I can tell all of these journals are connected to each other no matter how far apart they are. What someone else writes in their journal, everyone else with a journal can read it.

[Bridget starts walking again, taking the time to attempt to poke Sakura's cheek as she passes but not expecting to succeed. Ah well, at least they may as well head out to somewhere Bridget can buy sharp, pointy objects as they talk.]

Which reminds me, is there something about you that might make you worth kidnapping?

[If she did turn into piece of jerky, she swears not to eat her.

She's actually looking down at the journal with a furrowed brow so she DOES succeed since she's not paying attention. And the action didn't have killing intent so she doesn't dodge it. There's a couple blinks at the poke and then she rubs her cheek.]

The pink hair isn't enough?

[She quips and follows Bridget, finally opening the journal to a random page.

It's... writing in itself.

What. Just going to stare in awe at it.]

[Poor Sakura... But Bridget is too busy getting outside into the semi-fresh air to follow up on anything. And since the sun went down a while ago there's no hesitation or staying in the shaded areas either.]

Well, it would be for myself. If someone was born with that color where I came from there would be a massive convention of doctors and scientists. Not to mention anyone willing to do some black market dealing. Even someone able to do some genetic manipulation needs some sort of base gene for pink hair. Pink, blue, green, purple... those aren't uncommon with kids, but it's all dyed.

[Bridget really hoped there would be someplace open at this time of evening. Not that she was in a rush, setting up a slow enough pace that Sakura could flip through the journal as they went.]

[Sakura just sort of falls along dazedly, out of her peripheral, because she's trying to make sense of this journal and how words are appearing in it without her writing in it herself.

Or someone performing a jutsu. Offhand she replies;]

Yes, it's natural. [And then back to what she's REALLY worried about.]

Is the journal... supposed to write itself?

[Bridget glanced back with a small, wry smile.]

I admit I'm a little jealous. Though I suppose it's difficult to wear purple...

[But that train of thought could be put on hold for now.]

Anyways. I've never seen a paper journal do anything like that, but the concept of sharing communications over a network of some kind isn't new to me. The book isn't writing itself, it's showing what other people are writing in their own journals.

[That was more of Ino's color anyway. Sakura can't picture herself in her best friend's signature garb. She was much happier with her red to--

Or green flak jacket and black shirt now.]

Amazing...

[She sounds as in awe as she looks, eyes glancing back down at the, at first glance, unremarkable little book.]

Yes, communicating over a broadcast isn't new to me either. But we use headsets and walkie talkies or jutsu. This is a very high level of technology. [Or... something else.] And very useful. Can anybody read anything you write?

[She pulls a pen from her pouch that she had snatched at the bar and writes a 'Hello?' in it.]

[Thank goodness, someone with at least some level of what she considered 'modern' communication. It didn't beat out telepathy quite yet but maybe in another few hundred years...]

Not really. It's just like a walkie but with writing as well as sound. I'm a little disappointed there isn't video yet but that took a good thirty or so years even in a place that didn't rely on rum to make water safe to drink.

[Bridget spotted a potential store and slowed to a stop so she could take a look through the little window.]

[Naw, they got telepathy but it's exclusive to a particular clan. And the one Bridget reminds her of is from the clan.

She's staring down at the journal waiting for a response but when nothing comes immediately, her focus is back on Bridget.]

You can record sound with this?

[This would need a lot of studying later, if she's going to use it.]

I can't believe something that's normally simple and common is able to act as a communicator, with writing and sound. What is it powered by?

[where batteries]
