Welcome to our first Test Drive for high_seas! Here is where players can test out their characters' voices, try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! ♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

So is the empire, but not all of Ireland. Just the Northern bit. We don't use the United Kingdom bit for things outside Britain though. That's just strange.

[polarization]

[ Sefton just shakes his head. ]

[jawsthatbite]

Wait, wait, I get it. This is the different world thing. Differences between what we know and that both of us are right. This is quite strange!

[Says the madman who hunts monsters.]

That explains everything. We could possibly return to our previous conversation now that you're done telling old Jabberwock how wrong you think he is.

[polarization]

No point. S' just nonsense.

[ Which... is the point, Sefton. Also totally ignoring the fact that Jabberwock is probably right and this whole thing is weird and why is this his life, dangit. ]

[jawsthatbite]

Now you're getting it. That's exactly the point!

[Give up, Sefton. You can't win against Jabberwock.]

[polarization]

'N the point is that it shouldn't be!

[ NO. NEVER. He's too stubborn for this. ]

[jawsthatbite]

There's always something that's nonsense that you can't make heads or tails of.

[And for the first time in this conversation, Jabberwock is actually serious.]

Sometimes it's easier to go along with it than fighting against it.

[polarization]

Why? Easier doesn't mean... better.

[ Sefton's life philosophy right there. It's what he tells himself, anyway, because it would be easier to just use his power and damn the consequences. The way he lives now is the hardest thing he could imagine. ]

[jawsthatbite]

I agree with you there, but in some situations, the pain of fighting isn't worth it in the end. Trust me, I'm well acquainted with it.

[He looks up at Sefton.]

Is it really worth it in your case?

[polarization]

Ex... 'scuse me?!

[ Sefton's taken aback enough to tilt away from the banner of the nest, where he'd been leaning for the conversation. ]

I dunno what you're talking 'bout.

[jawsthatbite]

You live up in the crow's nest never let anybody close, physically or emotionally, but especially the physical. It's a good attempt for a kid, but not enough for me to not noticing you're hiding something. A lesser person might think abuse, but you're not meek enough for that, so I think you've got some sort of dangerous ability you don't want activated.

Am I wrong or not? I don't really think I am.

[polarization]

[ He shrinks back more, becoming a bit more timid instead of the anger he should be blustering up and throwing in Jabberwock's face. That is far too close an assessment to be comfortable. He almost feels sick, actually. ]

What d'you know...

[ It's an attempt, but a poor one. ]

[jawsthatbite]

[He snorts.] I'm mad, not blind.

I've been tracking supernatural threats for nearly thirty years. If I could pick up on a shapeshifter in a crowd, I can notice you hiding something.

[polarization]

Threats?

[ Forget that 'almost'. He does feel sick. ]

S' that... what you see when you look at me?

[jawsthatbite]

If I saw you as a threat, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Track, observe, and eliminate. That's how I was trained to operate and even here, I will act upon my training.

...do you think that you're a threat that I need to elimate?

[polarization]

[ There is a quiet moment as he gives this due consideration. His tone isn't as pronounced as it has been in this conversation, something that now might be hard to hear. He doesn't want to shout it across the ship, yet... ]

I might be.

[jawsthatbite]

[And that response makes Jabberwock give Sefton a soft smile.]

Then you aren't one. Whatever you're hiding is potentially dangerous, but you're doing your best from having it be activated and you're afraid of what would happen if you used it. That doesn't make you a threat at all. In fact, it makes you the opposite.

[polarization]

But... would you?

[ There's the question. Sefton would rather die than truly make someone suffer in obliviousness from his power again. If Jabberwock doesn't seem him as a threat, sees his measures as enough, does that mean he'd look the other way for an accident? ]

[jawsthatbite]

Yes, I would.

[There's not even a pause when Jabberwock says that. A threat is a threat, even if it's a kid.]

[polarization]

[ Sefton is quiet a moment before he goes back to leaning on the railing. ]

Okay.

[ There might be an unspoken thanks in there. ]
