♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

[It was amazing honestly, that it took such a major event to finally tear them apart. Everyone said it, and they very well knew it, the two friends where complete opposites of one another. From their hair, to the way they handled their entrapped fate. Whereas Seishin had fallen into despair, Toshio had decided to take what he learned and fight. He was going to be nothing like his father and mother, and people would know him not by his family name but by his own contributions to society. And in the end, he chose to come back to the village.]

[And he would continue to act as a Doctor, aiding those who desired to challenge their eventual demise. The humans had just as much of a right to fight for their lives as the Shiki did. And if those blood suckers had just continued to travel and feed from town to town rather than damn their little village as a refuge for the undead, he probably wouldn't have gotten involved. In fact, he probably wouldn’t have even noticed… after all, that was the power of that damnable thing called Rationality.]

[Perhaps the villagers could have just evacuated, but the families that lived there had existed for generations upon generations, and he doubted such a thought even crossed their minds. If he hadn't snapped them awake, proven their every fear to be real, they would have all died and Sunako would have had her way. And he wondered if Seishin even understood just who he was protecting.]

[Toshio did, as he watched the villagers work together to annihilate and destroy all evidence of the Shiki's existence. After a while many had lost their connection to the turned, and instead grinned and laughed over their accomplishments as they passed around corpses and boasted about their victories. He had turned them all into worthy killers, and that left him with a rather foul taste in his mouth. He couldn't even bare to think about what the survivors were doing now, or what they may do in the future. Any lives they take where also on his hands, even if he never knew they were stolen, much like those who were killed at the temple. If he had been there, he would have stopped them, but he didn't. He didn't know what happened to Mrs. Muroi, the woman he considered more of a mother then his own, or those that gave their lives to protect her. He didn’t even know what had become of those he sent after the writer. But it didn’t matter, he had plenty of time to think all of it through, and he decided upon this course of action. Whatever happened, he would accept the blame for.]

[But Toshio could guess what had become of them, and his guess was that those who did not make it out of the village during or after the war, was likely deceased. Even if they managed to survive getting caught in the crossfire, they would have burned along with the Satoba.]

No, Seishin, we're having this conversation now. [He did notice it, but he also knew that Seishin had the idea, and the right, to avoid him for the rest of their lives. There may not be a next time...And there was still things he needed to say that he never got a chance too.]

[Toshio had demanded he stop, that they continue to talk, but as they stare into one another’s eyes he couldn’t even think about a damn thing to say, or where to even begin. After a few moments, he found the words coming to his lips of their own accord.]

... I wonder if they told you, but when they finally came after me I called you.

[At the time there wasn’t any guarantee that the plan would work. Very easily Chizuru and her human pet could have killed him, for both the insult he caused her or if they had noticed anything suspicious. At that moment as he stared down the barrel of his gun he felt an ounce of fear and all he could think about was Seishin. ]

That’s when I learned that you had made up your mind. [He takes a long drag of his cigarette before catching his eyes again.] and there was no reason to forgive you, because there was nothing to be forgiven. Because that’s just who you are, the one who can turn monsters into men…

…as I realized I could turn men into monsters.

[Those last words were spoken in a hushed tone, but he could not say he felt guilty for what he had done. No, it was more like, a confession to something he knew very well he could never take back, but one he planned to not repeat, because he never wanted to involve another person again and risk losing them all again.]

NO U

[There's very little surprise at the demanding words. At all.

However...

His expression softens, a bit, as the next words are said. No, they hadn't told him that. A part of him had wondered if Toshio had even...

Then, he's left looking a bit...surprised, at the next part of what Toshio says. He'd seriously never expected something like that to come out of Toshio's mouth. For a moment, all he could do was stare back into Toshio's eyes. Then, after a couple of seconds, his face tenses as he turns his head to look away. Nobody had told him that. The truth is written clearly within his expression.
]

...I didn't know that.

[After a moment, he briefly looks back at Toshio's face, and then closes his eyes. He's thinking back to the day he'd walked into that room to find his father just...gone. Then, he went back in there to find those typed words in the form of a suicide letter. His father had simply given up, only to be met by a cruelly ironic twist of fate. His seeking out immortality had led him to the path of eternal suffering.

Seishin lets out a sigh, before speaking in a low tone.
]

I went there to find out what happened to my father.

Yeah well,...nothing surprising there.

[Of course they wouldn't tell him. Saying shit like that could cause doubt, and when they eventually killed the doctor well, he honestly wondered how the writer would have reacted to hearing of such an incident.]

[Was the drift between them so wide that he wouldn't have even cared if he died?]

[When Seishin gives him his excuse he flinches, his nails digging into the palm of his hands as he tries to keep control over his anger. Yelling wasn't going to solve anything, and it would probably just give the other further reason to run and escape from the situation.]

[So with a deep breath he somehow manages to keep his calm, although a certain stiffness still rested in his brow as he stared at the man before him.]

I heard he had been turned into a shiki, he was the only one who actually smiled when Sadafumi found them.

But isn't that just an excuse? You can't tell me you didn't know what was going to happen as soon as you walked into that mansion.

[As he said these last words his voice slowly became thick with judgment and frustration. He knew Seishin wasn't dumb, and he if he was going to listen to anything, it had better be his honest feelings, not these excuses finally driving him to where he was headed all along.]

[Otherwise phrased as: “Stop with the bullshit, Seishin.”]

[Without a doubt, Seishin would have been crushed to learn of Toshio being killed. Just from hearing he'd been shot, Seishin had felt a knot form within the pit of his stomach.

Knowing him as long as he had, Seishin could see the tense nature of the man before him. His own expression tensed a little as he heard the part about his father.

So, his father had finally been released from his suffering? He didn't have time to think on that, however, as he was met with two options:

He could tell Toshio the outright truth, or he could just...walk away. Not that all of him wanted to go with either one. Lying wasn't an option, because Toshio would be able to tell. As frustrating as it was, it was yet another reminder of just how close they once were.

He wanted things to be okay between them- if even for the pure sake of not losing over twenty years of friendship. Still, though...a part of him couldn't help but feel he didn't owe Toshio the explanation. And maybe he just really didn't want to see Toshio's face after he told him?
]

No, ...I can't tell you that. [Because he had known. In the end, he had known what she would do. And that same part of him that had wanted to see the village burn to the ground, hadn't cared even a little about becoming something other than human. It had wanted it to happen, for the sake of him being able to say that he had chosen his path in life, ...finally.

He went quiet, after that. Even with all of his reasons? He, for some reason, couldn't look Toshio in the face, anymore.

[Twenty years, where the only time they'd been separated had been during university. And back then they had talked about keeping it that way, of moving forward with their own lives and never looking back.]

[Now the circumstances where completely different, but Toshio couldn't help but hope that this was another false alarm of a “final farewell”]

[But another part of him felt obligated to do something about Jinrou. After all, wasn't he the one that told everyone to not think of these things as human anymore? That those people where already gone and the creatures they faced where nothing more than monsters?]

[Could he really allow himself to become such a hypocrite? But then again wasn't he already one. He was a Doctor, a man born to save lives, and yet he would lead the charge to the genocide of the shiki's.]

[It wasn't until the last of the cigarette in his mouth had burned away and the ash dropped to the floor that he would speak again, or even dare to move.]

[Toshio lets out a sigh and tosses the rest of his wasted cigarette to the ground, stomping it out as he moves forward to close the space between them. ]

We made our decisions and we’ll both have to live with them. But as I watched the village burn I decided that was the end. [At that time he had also realized that his battle hadn’t been with the shiki at all but something else, something he couldn’t really place his finger on even now. But he knew he had lost, and rather than feeling crushed he had felt relief. And he knew one thing, that he didn’t want to go back.]

This place offers you a new beginning, and I plan to take advantage of that. I’m not a leader, nor am I important in anyway here. I’m just another guy whose aim is to keep everyone from dying before we get home. [Although he already failed at that with a certain little girl, the memory of which caused him to look away from Seishin. And for a moment his mask was gone, even now when he lost a life he would blame himself. He was going to say more, it was clear by the way his mouth opened, but in the end he just closed it. He just didn’t know what to say.]

....

[Other then I don't want to loose you. But hadn't he been selfish enough? He would leave that decision to Seishin himself.]
writerjinrou: ([sad] this is disappointing)

[Seishin had stood there, quietly, the entire time Toshio seemed to be battling with an unseen, unknown internal dilemma. The Jinrou made a few guesses as to what could possibly be going through his head. With a gaze being shifted upward to scan the town, he realized that the feeling was returning. It was actually starting to become...a little difficult to ignore. There was a dryness in his throat, a pressure in his chest.

And...go figure, just as he was about to tell Toshio that he really needed to go...

Suddenly the space was being closed and Seishin felt his entire body tense a little. He was so close, and Seishin could feel the pressure in his chest building. Maybe if he just found something to eat...

Seishin attempted to focus on Toshio's words. As soon as he was hearing them, however, it became a little easier to focus. Seishin's expression softened a little, and then he turned his head to look to the side.
]

A new beginning, huh?

[He slowly exhaled and closed his eyes a moment. Put that way, Seishin could admit that it was an exceptionally tempting thought. A new beginning at life, in a place where he could start over. There was just the faintest lifting of the corner of his lips, before he opened his eyes and rested them on the doctor's face.

He'd seen the look on his face, prior to looking away. He'd seen the way Toshio had appeared to want to say something.
]

Did...something happen? [It was his attempt at maybe...reaching out? It was all he could think to do, in that moment. In spite of that feeling in his chest, he still cared. Even with the bitterness that lurked in his heart, in the back of his mind...he still cared about Toshio. Enough to push pride aside and make sure he was okay.

Especially with him right there in his face, feelings...right out in the open, like that.
