Test Drive for April 2014 Apps

Welcome to your monthly Test Drive for [community profile] high_seas! Here is where new players can test out their characters' voices, old players can try out new muses, and everyone can help each other get some threads for their applications! Feel free to use one of the prompts below, or come up with something on your own! Comment around, have fun, and remember that any CR formed here does not carry over to the game!

See you during the application round!

♦ So you're new to this world and have just woken up in the Town Square. How do you react? What do you do?

♦ You're lost at sea. Maybe you got separated from your crew. Or perhaps you're on an abandoned island. You need help!

♦ "Pirates off the starboard bow!" It's an enemy ship! Attack!!

♦ You and your crew are hanging out on your ship. Just another day at sea!

♦ "LAND, HO!" Hey look, a new island! How about you go explore it? Tell us what you find!

...

Not that I'm saying no to those dumplings.
streetferret: (Bolin: No Bo)

[He’s still going to check because he’s Mako and no amount of Bolin assurances is changing that. And he knows Bolin’s got something going in his head, just no exactly what. All he knows is it’s probably not thought out at all, and that responsibility will likely fall to him.

Like it always does, and it’s actually comforting because it’s what Mako’s used to. Dumplings and all.]

Not if we can’t catch up to the ship. This boat’s really just for going between the Moon and Sun when they’re docked. [But come on Bo. Mako’s just giving a semi-flat look at his seawater soaked brother.]

If you’re up to one hundred percent, then you’ll be helping us with the repairs. The Sun got hit pretty hard in that storm.

[Always the bearer of the responsible side of things.]

[ Shh Mako, shh. We can paddle with our hands. Or take turns kicking, but that's a secondary option. Bolin pats his arm again and wiggles his eyebrows in response to that flat look, to really drive his point home. Healthy as an ostrich-horse. A semi-aquatic ostrich-horse with its beautiful hair turning all salt crusty. But he lets it drop when Mako gets around to "got hit pretty hard".

Big, terrifying storm.

Right. Those do tend to be pretty hard-hitting. ]

Oh man, is everyone okay?
streetferret: (Serious: I really hate your ass right no)

[personal profile] streetferret 2014-04-03 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[He practically knows what Bolin's thinking from that eyebrow waggle and Mako's- just glad his brother's not being eaten by dolphin-piranhas.]

Korra and Asami are okay, I didn't stick around to check the rest. If anyone's hurt too bad, Korra can handle it.

[At least he thinks she can. The wind picks up in their sail and Mako sinks down to guide the rudder.]

We're going to have to get used to this kind of thing happening every now and then. [From one rough life to the next. But at least they can watch each other's back like usual.]

Living on a ship, fighting the navy, using swords, guns. None of it feels right.
bolincredible: (kiss kiss fall in shoehorned triangle)

what is this mysterious shutting up that Bolin's never heard of...

[personal profile] bolincredible 2014-04-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. [ Bolin gives Mako a look, stuck somewhere firmly between unimpressed and you don't say. Man, poor Mako, still trying to get a feel for the crew spirit. And the constant sailing. And the piracy. And the guns. And the really weird islands that shouldn't be able to exist in any kind of world where reality is a thing.

Then he pulls a piece of seaweed out of his sock and shudders, and he figures, yeah, okay, he's not exactly standing on firm ground when it comes to everything out here, either. This is a crazy world. So he raises his hands, seaweed and all (because hello, free soup ingredient), in an exaggerated shrug. ]

But I'm gonna say that running into the Spirit World when we might get trapped there with the representation of all the world's greatest darkness and evil felt way less right? Seriously. You can't top those levels of crazy. And we've still got Korra, who's only, y'know, a really awesome Avatar. Plus Asami's here, which I bet means we all only get arrested half as much and solve twice the problems, so that's great. As long as you try not to date one of them and kiss the other one at the same time. Again. And you've all got ol' Nuktuk on your side, [ at which point he thumps his chest twice, ] and we've all got you.

I mean, you put the two of us together and we can make it through anything, but the whole Team Avatar? [ Psh. ] Forget about it. Gem restored, world saved. Or... uh. Pirates who wanna get home, saved.
streetferret: (Serious: Gryffindor not Hufflepuff)

[personal profile] streetferret 2014-04-05 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[That look is all Mako needs to start focusing on making sure they catch up to the ship. Sorry, Bolin. He knows a pep talk’s coming and he’s really not-

A brief, withering glare is all Bolin gets at the mention of his past romantic problems. That he did bring upon himself.]

It’s not that simple, Bolin.

[But he couldn’t argue that having all four of them does improve their chances. And makes him less homesick, especially with his brother here.]

There are pirates that can do more than Team Avatar can put together, and not all of them are in it to help the others. [Mako’s not the biggest jerk out of all the outsiders, amazingly.] If they get the gem first…

[But that’s not as important as them actually catching up to the Sun.]
bolincredible: (sketchy as fuck brosef)

[personal profile] bolincredible 2014-04-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If they get it first, then it's hopeless and we can pretty much say goodbye to ever seeing home again. Haha, yeah, I don't know why no one ever... thinks about that. [ Except for how most people kind of do from time to time. Probably. Seaweed: dropped.

Bolin is infinitely glad that his brother's around. He loves Mako more than just about anything or anyone, and he's glad that they've got someone around who's good at keeping his head under pressure, and at thinking about the important, practical stuff for tomorrow, so that Bolin doesn't have to think about all that as much and mess up calling the shots, which would just kind of make more work for Mako because he'd have to follow behind him and fix everything, probably. But talk about your negativity to work with. Even Eska was still a romantic at heart.

... maybe a little too much of a romantic, but still a romantic. ]
streetferret: (Bolin: Stop)

[personal profile] streetferret 2014-04-07 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
[Captain Cheerful. Mako really does think of those things, mainly because he's used to the worst happening and dealing with it so Bolin doesn't have to. But he can tell he's not helping matters.]

But you're right, Bolin. [Don't make a big deal of it, please, bro. He starts tying the lowering ropes to each side of the sailboat.] We have a chance with all four of us here. If there's a way to get home, we'll figure it out.

[He has his doubts that the gem is the only way home. They got here without one, then they have to be able to leave that same way.]

And you're still getting checked up to see if you caught something. [Aside from seaweed.]
bolincredible: (THE HILLS ARE ALIIIIVE)

[personal profile] bolincredible 2014-04-07 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
[ And instantly mollified for ten thousand, Alex. He never was much of a grudge holder, and then on top of it there's "you're right, Bolin." Wow. Was there even a thing he was disappointed about? Was the wind just starting to make him realize his clothes are really wet and cold and stuck to him? Did Mako say something about being checked up?

Impossible and to be disregarded. Because he's right. He has no proof to show Korra or Asami in the future, perhaps, but he has this moment and that's obviously what matters. More important, perhaps, is the generally positive statement that came out of Mako's mouth. Coerced, yet still more appealing to the senses than a naysay. HE'LL TAKE IT. ]

Ha! Gotcha! You said something and it wasn't a complete downer, Mako! I'm so proud. [ Look at you, all grown up and giving in to your kid brother instead of arguing your reasonable and valid point. ] Come on. Bring it in for the positivity hug. Don't be shy!

[ Bolin's aware, at least, that it is a valid point. He'd just rather fling his arms open, flick some water in Mako's general direction in the process, and let something less terrifying hang over his brother's head for a minute instead of deeply considering the possibilities himself. AFter all, the threat of the dripping wet hug is always all too real. ]
streetferret: (Bolin: Maybe I needed a hug.)

[personal profile] streetferret 2014-04-07 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
[Annnd there's the big deal about it.]

Bolin-

[Too late. He's in a sopping wet embrace from his brother as the sailboat's hoisted up to the ship. Not how expected this small rescue to end, but all in all; he has his brother back instead of thinking of him being lost at sea.

There's a good ten seconds, because he knows Bolin won't let go until he acknowledges at least something, before he finally says.]

Okay. You got me. [Just drag it out of him at the most inopportune time...]

Dry clothes, check up and then a refresher on tying knots. [So that big brothers don't flip out in the future and go into mother hen mode.]
bolincredible: (y...eah that's mako for you.....)

[personal profile] bolincredible 2014-04-08 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
[ Dragging it out at inopportune times is the secret to success. Just like making it so he has to change clothes for no good reason. It's the magical journey of ~*brotherhood*~. Mako earns his release, and Bolin's totally ready to hop that railing into the majestic sunset of piracy and family and... goofing off with Korra and stuff. Your basic ship life. ]

I can live with that. Because I bet I'm completely not sick and we won't have to rescue anybody else today, either. [ Give it a few days. Ocean's rude as hell. ] Thanks for that, by the way. Not a huge fan of the clutches of the briny deep. Go figure.
